JCOC Research Results- Lead In Jewelry

Respondents in this study stated paint as being the item of most concern and fine jewelry being a least concern when asked about lead contamination. Almost half (47 percent) of the respondents confirmed paint was believed to be the greatest source of lead contamination. More than 50 percent of respondents were not at all concerned about lead poisoning from fine jewelry however, 7 percent of respondents were extremely concerned of lead poisoning from fine jewelry. When asked about lead poisoning in Children’s fine jewelry 60 percent of respondents were concerned.

Three quarters of the respondents had heard of cases of lead poisoning in adults and over half of the respondents had heard of it in children’s fine jewelry with paint still believed to be the most common cause of the contamination in both groups. And in addition, approximately 75 percent of respondents were less likely to purchase fine jewelry if they were made aware of cases of lead poisoning caused by fine jewelry.

Due to the concern of lead poisoning 90 percent of respondents considered not purchasing fine jewelry for themselves or another adult and 82 percent considered not purchasing jewelry for children.
